Thus was born the <strong data-start=\"947\" data-end=\"974\">Volkswagen Karmann Ghia<\/strong> project, conceived to unite German engineering with the elegance of Italian design.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-400b846 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"400b846\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-eb0a50f\" data-id=\"eb0a50f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-093bba0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"093bba0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong>Volkswagen Karmann Ghia<\/strong> was the first Volkswagen sports model, produced between 1955 and 1974, initially as a <em>coupe<\/em> 2 + 2 seats and, from 1957, also in <strong>convertible<\/strong> version (convertible). Its name comes from the collaboration between the German coachbuilder <strong>Karmann<\/strong> (in charge of manufacturing) and the Italian design house <strong>Carrozzeria Ghia<\/strong> (responsible for styling). The result was a car with smooth lines and refined style mounted on the platform of the VW <strong>Beetle<\/strong>, from which it inherited its simple rear boxer engine and its renowned reliability. Although its power was modest for a sports car (initially ~30 hp with a 1200 cc engine), its Italian design and German mechanical robustness gave it a unique appeal, accompanied by an affordable price for the time.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac27988 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ac27988\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Karmann Ghia was an <strong>immediate commercial success<\/strong>. In August 1955, the first production model left the Osnabr\u00fcck (Germany) plant, and the public&#8217;s reception exceeded expectations: more than <strong>10,000 units<\/strong> were sold in <strong>the first year<\/strong>. Volkswagen soon had to <strong>double<\/strong> daily <strong>production<\/strong> to meet demand. During its production period, more than <strong>445,000 Karmann Ghia<\/strong> were assembled in Germany and another 41,000 in Brazil, which was another important market for this model. In fact, the Karmann Ghia became the best-selling imported car in the United States in the late 1950s, thanks to the combination of its exotic appearance with the reliability and low fuel consumption that the public associated with Volkswagen. The <strong data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"515\">Volkswagen Beetle<\/strong> represented just that. But by the early 1950s, the public began to demand cars with <strong data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"676\">greater aesthetic and emotional appeal<\/strong>, not just functional ones. CEO <strong data-start=\"1056\" data-end=\"1074\">Heinz Nordhoff<\/strong>, initially reluctant to &#8220;image cars&#8221;, eventually accepted the idea of creating an <strong data-start=\"1158\" data-end=\"1191\">affordable prestige model<\/strong> that would reinforce Volkswagen&#8217;s identity. The prototype, unobtrusively presented in 1953, excited Volkswagen executives, who authorized its series production.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5188ffb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5188ffb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong>body of the Karmann Ghia was handcrafted in steel<\/strong>, unlike the more automated processes of the Beetle, which made it more expensive to produce. For example, in 1955 it cost around DM 7,500, almost twice as much as a standard Beetle (DM 3,790). Even so, Volkswagen kept the Karmann Ghia in a reasonable price range for a sports car, well below the Italian exotic cars or the Porsche 356, facilitating access to a wider audience. Officially it was a 2+2 seater, although the rear seats were symbolic. Equipped with the 1,192 cc, 30-34 hp engine of the &#8220;Beetle Export&#8221;, it reached <strong data-start=\"2450\" data-end=\"2467\">about 120 km\/h<\/strong>, aided by a more aerodynamic bodywork. Curiously, the first examples <strong data-start=\"2552\" data-end=\"2592\">did not include a fuel gauge<\/strong>, using instead a mechanical reserve, just like the Beetle.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de04b99 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"de04b99\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In August 1957 Volkswagen launched the long-awaited <strong>convertible version<\/strong> (Type 14 cabriolet) of the Karmann Ghia. Building a convertible required additional body reinforcements, but the result was very satisfactory: the Karmann Ghia <strong>convertible<\/strong> was considered more elegant than the Beetle Cabrio itself, thanks to its lower and more stylish hood. The popularity of the open-top version grew especially in sunny markets such as California and Florida, where the moderate speed limits of the time made it possible to enjoy the ride without demanding high performance. Between 1957 and 1974, <strong>80,837<\/strong> units of the Karmann Ghia convertible were produced in Germany (and a few in Brazil, as we will see below). With the coupe and convertible, Volkswagen had managed to introduce a car with an aspirational image, while affordable, consolidating the global reputation of the brand during the 60s.    <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\"
